Title

Jerusalem: aerial view

Description

This aerial photograph of Jerusalem, looking north, shows the hilly character of the area. The Old City, including the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, can be seen in the center of the picture, and the skyscrapers of the new city are in the background. The shadow to the right of the Temple Mount covers the western slope of the Kidron Valley (biblical Valley of Jehoshaphat). The Hinnom Valley runs perpendicular, then curves around the southwestern edge of the Old City. The shadow to the left of the Temple Mount is the Tyropoean Valley ("Valley of the Cheesemakers"). The City of David sits between these two shadows, below the southern wall of the Temple Mount. At the top right of the photo you can see the water tower of the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus.
