This map shows the 3 political powers in the Mediterranean world on the eve of the Crusades: Catholic Europe (yellow); the Byzantine Empire (orange); and the Arab kingdoms of the Middle East and North Africa (red). The arrows represent the various movements of the First Crusade toward Israel: one through the Rhine; one by ship through Venice and Constantinople; and one by ship from southern Italy through Constantinople. The stars represent the major cities involved: Constantinople, Rome, and Clermont (France).
