Title
Nimrud's Castle: fortifications
Description
This photograph shows a close-up of the fortifications around Nimrod's Castle, including the main defensive wall and its rounded towers. The castle is located in the modern-day northern Golan Heights, on the southern slopes of Mt. Hermon, and guards the route from Tyre to Damascus. Major additions to the fortress were made in 1229 CE under the Ayyubid dynasty to guard against an invasion of Damascus by the Christian Crusaders. The view looks northeast.
