Jerusalem: Dome of the Rock - interior view

This is a photograph of the interior of the dome that sits on the Dome of the Rock. It was planned as a deliberate imitation of the vault over the Anastasis of the Holy Sepulchre; even the size of this hemisphere is within a few feet of the Sepulchre's dome. It was the caliph's intention to raise a building that would be in the architectural tradition established by Constantine but would far outshine its Christian predecessor.
