Title

Lower Galilee

Description

This photograph shows the Jezreel Valley, which separates the central hills from Lower Galilee. The Via Maris (the road that runs north from Egypt along the coast) cuts through the Jezreel Valley on its way to Damascus. Southern Galilee, known as 'Lower Galilee' in antiquity because it was of lower elevation than the northern half of Galilee, is the most fertile part of Israel/Palestine, good for both farming and shepherding. The mountain in the background is Mt. Tabor.
